Sonia Maskrey

Hello, my name is Sonya Maskrey. Let me share a bit about myself with you. I am a graduate of Derry Area High School. In the non-traditional sense, I married and began raising a family before attending The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg where I earned a BS in Biology. This was done part time in 5 years to allow me to continue ample involvement in family life as I studied.

My experience raising 3 children, one of which was disabled, led me to pursue a career in Physical Therapy. I was accepted to University of Pittsburgh’s PT program and earned a master’s degree in PT. During my studies, I began to develop an interest in serving the geriatric community. The thought was to help folks improve and maintain physical functioning for as long as possible.
I learned how certain injuries and diseases affect brain functioning for all aspects of daily life, including planning, moving, and thinking. I recall personal experiences with elderly family members who seemed to be harassed by others about moving slowly, or not responding correctly to a question, or responding too slowly, or forgetting things. I now understand that the folks who were moving slowly, or answering incorrectly or with delayed responses, or not remembering things were likely suffering from some form of dementia. The folks who were expressing displeasure at those traits were unaware of the effects of dementia on the thinking and physical ability of their loved ones, and did not understand. All parties involved appeared frustrated and disheartened.

I began focusing my clinical experiences and continuing education on caring for those with dementia, including guiding their family members in managing aspects of daily life with their loved one; with a focus on physical functioning. I soon learned that improvement in physical functioning is more often a by-product of a calming approach and gentle redirection than a specific exercise regimen.

I was excited to learn of the opportunity to facilitate a group of people who are having these experiences with their loved ones diagnosed with dementia. The premise of the support group is for participants to share with each other their experiences and assist one another to cope with the issues that arise when caring for a person suffering with dementia – of which there are many. I believe I can offer assistance and am looking forward to helping in this way.
